Past Sessions

The goal of each Tiferet session is to emerge with a growing proficiency in an expressive art-form blended with an inspired knowledge of Jewish ideas associated with the course theme. The two-hour evenings will include 90 minutes of active instruction, preceded by 15-minutes of focused insights into Torah and Chassidut.

Watercolor: Painting with Light

Date:  Four sessions on Mondays , September 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th

Time: 7:45pm-9:45pm

Fee:  $80*. Please note: This fee excludes supplies. A supply list will be provided upon registration. Shadyside Blick Art Materials is suggested for purchases.  If ordering online, please give yourself ample time for the art materials to arrive.

Goals of the Class:

  • Gaining comfort level and familiarity with usage and application of the watercolor medium.

  • Learning to notice and appreciate depths and shades of colors and the effects they create.

  • Finding new ways to create beauty through planning and visualization.  

  • Exploring the fun and freedom in experimenting with mixed media.

 
Class #1: Exploring Watercolor & Mystical Insights 
  • Discovering the unique process of using watercolors.

  • Learning about light and dark and how to incorporate into watercolor.

  • Gaining visualization techniques on creating the beauty of watercolor.

  • Creating watercolor postcards

 
Class #2: Still Life Objects
  • Reviewing and applying learned techniques towards still life objects.

  • Usage of colors in the subject matter.

  • Learning more about shadows and atmosphere.
     

Class #3: Nature Scenes
  • Exploring outdoor nature scenes.

  • Becoming familiar with concepts of layering.

  • Learning to discern levels of lightness and darkness in relation to measure of distance.

 
Class #4: Gaining Freedom & Incorporating the Art Form With Spiritual Inspiration
  • Learning gesture drawing.

  • Exploring the human form.

  • Incorporating mixed media such as colored pencils, pastels, and gauche.

  • Finding joy in freestyle painting.

Rabbi Choni Friedman is a scholar of Jewish thought and applied ChaBaD philosophy.  He is the spiritual leader at Bnei Emunoh Chabad of Greenfield.
